The Bermuda Triangle
Also known as the Devil’s triangle, the Bermuda triangle is
a hypothetically bordered region between Miami, San Juan (Puerto Rico) and Bermuda.
With its boundaries and exact area (1,300,000 – 3,900,000 sq. km)
specifications debatable, this infamous region towards the western part of the
North Atlantic Ocean is a mysterious region with tons of air planes and ship
disappearance incidents. It is one of the most heavily travelled regions on the
planet, with regular passage of air planes and ships in the vicinity. However,
it has its fair share of unexplained and mysterious disappearances of vessels
passing by.

Over the course of time, there have been cases that have a
seemingly indescribable explanation. While many theorists have tried to explain
the happenings in the region with shocking descriptions which seem logical,
others have simply rejected these claims attributing them to human and machine
generated errors. The incidents of disappearances in this region date back to
1600s, some reports say. One of the major disappearances in the region is a
bunch on Naval bomber aircrafts (Flight 19) belonging to the US Navy. 5 US Navy
Grumman TBM Avenger torpedo bombers carrying 14 crew members take off from the
naval base at Florida. The objective was bombing training in the region nearby.
As the aircrafts approach the region, the flight leader was heard relaying the
message- “We are entering white water, nothing seems right. We don't know where
we are, the water is green, no white.” The Navy investigators attributed the
disappearance to navigational error leading to the aircrafts running out of
fuel. After weeks- long search and rescue missions by the Navy, the official
report declared that it was “as if they flew to Mars”. Chilling, isn’t it?

Another incident in the region that is attributed to as one
of the major losses incurred to the US Navy that is not related to combat is
the sinking of the US Navy cargo carrier USS Cyclops. With more than 300 men on
board and thousands of tons of manganese loaded, this giant carrier went
missing without a trace after 4th March, 1918, after departing the
island of Barbados.
There have been several instances like this where ships
and/or aircrafts have gone missing without any trace, with practically zero
evidence of mishap. While many independent theorists try to explain them with
vivid explanations, non-believers reject the same attributing it to human or
machine generated errors. However, the theorists’ explanations don’t at all seem
out of place. Some theorists explain the phenomenon as a paranormal event. Some
pin the blame on the advanced leftover technologies of the mythical submerged
city of Atlantis. Others explain it as a gateway to other worlds (concept of
parallel universes and theory of jumping worlds). Some theories saying it is
some kind of a wormhole. Well, who knows?
Apart from these paranormal explanations, there are some
scientific explanation attempts as well. Compass variations, human errors,
powerful hurricanes, Gulf stream etc. are generally the explanations to many
such incidents. One explanation focused on the presence of methane hydrates,
which significantly lowers the density of the water, enough to sink a ship.
Another interesting explanation by meteorologists attributes the losses to hexagonal clouds, which are air pockets
that act as air bombs, generating winds up to a velocity of 170mph, which on
coming in contact with the water, can generate waves as high as 45 feet.

However, looking at the statistics, it does not seem unusual
for a place that is so much travelled. As mentioned earlier, it is one of the
most heavily travelled regions on the planet and proportionally speaking, the
number of aircrafts and ships missing is not that different from the other such
regions. Furious storms and ocean currents can also play a part in these
disappearances. Exaggeration of the number of missing vessels may have been
done to create a manufactured mystery. Several of such reasons may be cited
explaining that it is nothing but a hoax, a generated belief. But what if it
isnot? What if there actually is an actual explanation to these events which we
have not been able to step foot on? What if the theories that link the
phenomena to a wormhole are true? Well, who knows? But certainly, I would be
really thrilled if these are true. What do you think?
